A local community is in mourning following the tragic death of an eight-year-old boy who was involved in a fatal collision with an e-bike while on his way home from school.

The incident occurred as Zeke Hondow was riding along a bike path near the Kawana Way and Sunshine Motorway interchange in Mountain Creek on Thursday afternoon. The collision took place between Zeke and a 15-year-old boy who was also riding an e-bike. Both riders were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.

Zeke was quickly transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries and tragically passed away.

Authorities from the Queensland Police have reported that the Forensic Crash Unit is actively investigating the incident. According to their statement, the crash involved two e-bikes, resulting in the death of the primary school-aged Zeke while the high school-aged rider, who declined medical treatment, is cooperating with the police investigation.

The Forensic Crash Unit is urging any witnesses or individuals with relevant footage of the incident to come forward to assist with their ongoing investigations.

In response to the tragic event, Queensland’s Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg emphasized the need for increased attention to e-bike safety issues. He expressed his condolences, acknowledging the sorrow the family and friends of Zeke must be experiencing. Mickelberg highlighted the importance of government action at all levels to address the challenges posed by the rapid technological advancements in e-bikes.

To support Zeke’s family during this difficult time, a GoFundMe page has been established to help alleviate the financial burden caused by his untimely death. The fundraising campaign has already raised over $6,000 in contributions.
