A 12-year-old boy tragically lost his life after engaging in a dangerous social media trend called Chroming, which was popular on TikTok, a recent inquest has revealed. The boy, Oliver Gorman, was found unresponsive in his bedroom on May 5 after returning from a family vacation in Hyde.
Despite immediate hospitalization, the boy could not be saved. The presence of several empty deodorant cans in his room and the results of a post-mortem examination indicated that he died from inhaling butane gas, a common propellant in aerosol deodorants.
The coroner has expressed significant concerns about the proliferation of such challenges on TikTok, accusing the platform of readily promoting these challenges to young and impressionable users. Suggestions have been made for enhanced warning labels and potential age restrictions on purchasing aerosol deodorants to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Oliver’s mother, Clare Gillespie, described her son as a kind and family-oriented boy with a love for animals and a calming presence. The inquest revealed that Oliver had shown signs of struggling with the transition from primary to high school and potential bullying issues, although specific details were lacking.
Authorities highlighted the dangers of inhalant abuse and the influence of social media trends on young individuals. The coroner emphasized the need for stricter regulations regarding aerosol purchases and raised concerns about TikTok’s role in circulating harmful challenges.
Following the incident, Oliver’s family and friends launched a campaign called Oliver’s Awareness to raise awareness about bullying and online safety. Ms. Gillespie urged parents to be vigilant and educate their children about the risks associated with aerosol inhalation.
