A significant change is on the horizon for phone users in the UK, as traditional copper landlines are set to be phased out and replaced by a new technology known as Digital Voice. This transition, scheduled to take effect in January 2027, aims to enhance reliability and introduce new features like clearer calls, call forwarding to smartphones, and improved call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing messages.
In light of this impending change, BT is launching a campaign, fronted by Clare Balding, to raise awareness and encourage homeowners to prepare for the switch to Digital Voice. Research indicates that many individuals tend to delay addressing important tasks, assuming that functional services do not require immediate action.
Customers are reassured that they are likely to retain their phone numbers, and costs are expected to remain stable during the transition. Most households can seamlessly transition to Digital Voice by connecting their existing phones to their broadband hubs, eliminating the need for engineer visits. However, in case of any issues, contacting the service provider may be necessary to resolve connectivity problems.
Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, emphasized the importance of responding promptly to communications from service providers to avoid disruptions in essential connections. The shift to digital landlines represents a significant upgrade to the country’s communication infrastructure, offering enhanced reliability and security to keep users connected to vital services.
Additionally, BT advises customers with special requirements, such as those using telecare devices, to notify their provider promptly to receive appropriate support. Digital Voice, BT’s new home phone service, leverages broadband technology to provide modern features like Multi Call, three-way calling, and call diversion, offering improved call quality and eliminating common issues like crackling calls.
For most users, transitioning to Digital Voice will not impact their phone usage habits, as the service is bundled with broadband at no additional cost. This seamless upgrade aims to deliver a more efficient and feature-rich communication experience to households across the UK.
