In the past, vinyl faced uncertain times as modern convenience overshadowed the traditional listening experience, with music formats becoming increasingly compact and digital. Nevertheless, there has been a resurgence of interest in physical music formats.

Recent data shows a significant increase in revenue from record sales in the U.S., reaching $1.4 billion. Similarly, Canada witnessed a notable surge in vinyl sales between 2019 and 2021. While these figures may not match streaming platforms’ revenue, they reflect changing music consumption habits and the emergence of “listening bars” worldwide.

Jodie Dewald, co-owner of The Little Jerry in Toronto, emphasized their commitment to exclusively playing vinyl records without digital capabilities, providing patrons with an immersive listening experience through a premium sound system.

Inspired by the concept of jazz kissa from postwar Japan, modern vinyl cafés and listening bars in North America offer a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the traditional kissa, focusing on staff-curated music selections and creating a balanced blend of optimal listening and social interaction.

These establishments prioritize high-quality audio experiences, offering finely-tuned rooms and equipment that enhance the sonic richness without overpowering the space, moving away from algorithm-driven playlists to personalized selections or DJ-curated vinyl collections.

According to Brandon Ng from Doze Hifi in Vancouver, the allure of listening bars in today’s fast-paced world lies in providing a break from excessive screen time, allowing patrons to immerse themselves fully in the music presented in its purest form.

Whether a music enthusiast or a curious listener seeking a different experience, several listening bars and vinyl cafés across Canada cater to various tastes and preferences.
