Must read

A man who has reached the remarkable age of 111 shared his longevity secrets, attributing his long life to a regimen of wine and sweets. Zhan Changcheng, a resident of Wanyao Village in southern China, was born on 17 March 1914, having lived through significant historical events such as World War I, the Warlord Era, the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Chinese Civil War, and 76 years of communist rule.

Zhan, who has nine children ranging from 59 to 82 years old, remains active by engaging in walks and card games with friends. His family, spanning four generations, resides together, with his sons and their partners taking turns caring for him. Known for his meticulous personal habits, Zhan diligently maintains cleanliness and appearance, brushing his teeth thrice daily and waking up at 5 am to await breakfast after a stroll in the garden.

Despite his fondness for sweets, even flavoring his white rice, Zhan’s health remains robust, as indicated by regular check-ups and stable blood sugar levels. Renowned for his expertise in bamboo weaving, a craft he pursued for over 50 years, Zhan mentored numerous apprentices over the years. He continues to meet with friends who share his passion for weaving, emphasizing the importance of wine in his daily routine.

While Zhan was once a heavy smoker, he quit a few years back under family pressure, though he still carries a pack of cigarettes to offer acquaintances. Described as leading a simple and contented life, Zhan’s preference for modest living, symbolized by a bowl of rice and water, has contributed to his longevity. Wanyao Village boasts 22 residents over 90 years old, with two surpassing the century mark. Zhan, recognized as the second oldest person in China, stands behind Zhou Renqing, who will celebrate his 112th birthday on 7 November.
