A devastating incident unfolded when a firefighter arrived at the scene of a car crash only to discover that the victim was his own son. The tragic event occurred in Sardinia, Italy, on October 26, as Omar Masia, 25, and four friends were returning from a party. Their BMW veered off Baldu Bridge on Baldu-L’Agnata road in Tempio Pausania, plunging 10 meters into a dry riverbed below.
Omar, who was seated in the back, was fatally crushed when the car’s roof collapsed, leading to his immediate death. His father, Massimiliano Masia, was one of the first responders who found his son’s lifeless body at the crash site. The driver and another passenger, both injured, managed to alert emergency services after trekking to a nearby house due to the lack of phone signal and passing vehicles.
Upon reaching the scene, Massimiliano recognized his son’s friends and learned that Omar was trapped inside the vehicle. Despite efforts to revive him, Omar could not be saved. The surviving passengers were hospitalized and are recovering well, with one already discharged.
Omar, a resident of Calangianus, worked as an electrician. Antonio Giordano of the Sassari Fire Brigade expressed the profound impact on Mr. Masia, stating that the tragedy of losing his son in an accident he responded to was incomprehensible. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash and address concerns about road conditions in the area.
The driver, found to be slightly above the legal alcohol limit, faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving. The incident has prompted scrutiny of other bridges in the vicinity for safety concerns.
