Must read

The latest data reveals that over a million current account switches were made for the third consecutive year. Nationwide led the way with 41,450 customers switching, attracted by its incentives including a £175 switching offer and annual £100 bonus payments. Monzo and NatWest also saw significant account switches, with a total of 350,114 switches in the busiest quarter of 2025.

While the total number of switches in 2025 reached 1,054,521, it was lower compared to the previous years due to changes in interest rates affecting savings rates. On the flip side, Santander, Halifax, and JP Morgan’s Chase experienced a significant number of account losses during the same period.

John Dentry, the product manager at Pay.UK, which oversees the Current Account Switch Service, emphasized the importance of a competitive banking market that allows consumers to easily switch to better-suited accounts. In other news, Waymo, a US firm, plans to launch driverless cabs in London later this year, pending safety approvals.

Moreover, the music and arts festival, Solfest, has gone into liquidation due to significant challenges. The fate of ticket holders for the 2026 festival remains uncertain. Additionally, a report suggests that many struggling firms, including those in the hospitality sector, could face closure in 2026 due to financial distress.

In the retail sector, GAME is on the verge of collapse for the second time, while easyJet reports record summer bookings despite increased losses. Water bills across England and Wales are set to rise by an average of 5.4% from April onwards. Furthermore, the UK car manufacturing industry faced a 70-year low in production in 2025, attributed to various factors including import tariffs and cyber attacks.

As households brace for another round of inflation-busting water bill hikes, the industry faces criticism for dividends to investors and executive pay. The UK’s top brands, including Marks and Spencer and Post Office, have been recognized for their performance and public perception improvements.
