Detour Discotheque, a small traveling event known for its unconventional locations, is set to make a stop at a nunnery. The upcoming event will transform Matera, an iconic city in southern Italy, into a vibrant 70s-themed weekend in September. The festivities will be spread across various venues, including Fondazione Monacelle, a historic former convent now serving as a cultural center, and Area 8, a trendy space for artistic endeavors.
Taking place from Friday, September 11, to Sunday, September 13, the exclusive Detour Discotheque festival will accommodate only 300 attendees. This unique gathering coincides with Matera’s designation as the Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue 2026, adding to the allure of the event.
During the weekend, the picturesque city will host retro disco parties on its terraces and underground spaces. Guests can indulge in authentic Italian cuisine provided by Crosta Mollica, featuring pizzas and snacks, all against the backdrop of Matera’s UNESCO-recognized cave districts, known as the Sassi.
Detour Discotheque, recognized as one of the “Best New Things to Do in the World” by Time Out, has gained a reputation for hosting events in remote locations. Past editions in Iceland, Scotland, and Switzerland have attracted guests from around the globe, including countries like India, the US, Australia, and Vietnam.
Founder Jonny Ensall expressed excitement about returning to southern Italy, stating that Matera’s beauty and creative atmosphere make it an ideal location for the festival. Matera, located near Puglia in the Basilicata region, is easily accessible from Bari Airport and is renowned for its well-preserved historical charm. As a former European Capital of Culture and a filming location for the James Bond movie “No Time to Die,” Matera offers a unique setting for cultural events.
Previous editions of Detour Discotheque have featured renowned DJs like Erol Alkan, DJ Paulette, and Rahaan. Tickets for the upcoming event, starting at £195, are now available for reservation during the pre-sale period. The launch party will be held at the Aethos Hotel in London on Thursday, February 12.
