A prosecutor informed jurors that a former gang leader masterminded the 1996 drive-by shooting of iconic rapper Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas as payback for an assault on his nephew. Duane (Keffe D) Davis, 63, faces a murder charge in Clark County, Nevada, for allegedly directing a group of men to carry out the attack on Shakur, a prominent figure in the rap industry at 25. The prosecutor highlighted Davis’s role in orchestrating the shooting, citing recent statements made by Davis himself that brought the long-dormant case back into focus.
In response, defense attorney Michael Sanft argued that despite 30 years passing, there is minimal concrete evidence to support the prosecution’s case. Sanft questioned the credibility of Davis’s accounts, labeling them as unreliable and unverifiable. The killing of Shakur heightened the perception of violence within hip-hop culture during the era of gangsta rap, fueling the East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry.
Police revealed that Davis, a long-standing suspect in the investigation, became chargeable only after admitting his involvement in public statements following his 2023 arrest. The trial, presided over by Judge Carli Kierny, is anticipated to last up to six weeks and may include testimony from Marion (Suge) Knight, co-founder of Death Row Records, who was present during Shakur’s murder and is currently serving a prison term for an unrelated conviction.
Authorities described Davis as the key figure behind a swift plan to avenge his nephew’s beating by Shakur and his associates at the MGM Grand casino on the night of September 7, 1996. The casino altercation stemmed from tensions between two rival Los Angeles gangs, the South Side Compton Crips led by Davis, and the Mob Piru affiliated with Knight and Death Row Records. Davis allegedly procured the murder weapon and facilitated the shooting of Shakur, resulting in the rapper’s death six days later. The trial may also shed light on Davis’s alleged involvement in the unsolved murder of Christopher Wallace, known as the Notorious B.I.G., postulated to be a retaliatory act for Shakur’s killing.
