“Mother Mourns Unthinkable Loss: Sons’ Killer Gets Life Sentence”

Must read

The mother of two boys in Saint John who were tragically killed by their father last year expressed that no court sentence can ever bring back her beloved sons, who were her greatest source of happiness. In a statement following the sentencing of Roman Kamyshnyy to life in prison without parole for 25 years, she emphasized the irreplaceable loss she feels and the perpetual grief she will carry.

Kamyshnyy, aged 46, was found guilty by a jury of two counts of first-degree murder of his 10 and 17-year-old sons. The sentencing, as per the Criminal Code, mandated a life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years, to be served concurrently.

During the sentencing in the New Brunswick Court of King’s Bench, Justice Darrell Stephenson acknowledged the limitation of his authority but condemned Kamyshnyy’s actions as horrific and depraved. The judge described Kamyshnyy’s motive as driven by vengeance, which was evident from the brutal nature of the crime.

Evidence presented at the trial revealed that Kamyshnyy meticulously planned and executed the murders to inflict maximum pain on his ex-wife following their recent divorce. The court heard that Kamyshnyy fatally stabbed both boys in their home, with one of the sons bravely fighting for his life against his father.

The Crown prosecutor highlighted the profound impact of the murders on the community, emphasizing the lasting trauma inflicted on families, friends, and law enforcement personnel. Several victim impact statements were submitted, underscoring the enduring pain and devastation caused by Kamyshnyy’s heinous actions.

Kamyshnyy, who maintained partial memory loss of the events, expressed no remorse during the sentencing. The imposed conditions included a no-contact order with his ex-wife and her family, a DNA sample submission, a lifetime ban on possessing firearms, and a victim fine surcharge.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of the tragedy, the focus remains on honoring the memories of the boys and supporting their mother in her journey to rebuild her life while cherishing the love and joy her sons brought into the world.
