A decade has passed since The Tragically Hip’s final performance in Kingston, Ontario, but Paul Langlois admits that he is still coming to terms with it. The guitarist expressed his disbelief in an interview with CBC’s Eli Glasner on ‘The National’ Thursday evening, reflecting on the impact of their last show and the band’s influence on fans.
The emotional farewell concert took place at Kingston’s Rogers K-Rock Centre, now known as Slush Puppi Place, where lead singer Gord Downie bid farewell to a packed audience in 2016. Tears flowed as Downie sang iconic hits like “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon” for the last time, leaving a lasting impression on both the band members and their devoted supporters.
After forming in 1984 and releasing 13 studio albums, The Tragically Hip concluded their touring career in 2016 with the hometown show on August 20. Downie’s battle with terminal brain cancer, diagnosed in December 2015, ultimately led to his passing in October 2017 at the age of 53.
To mark the 10th anniversary of the band’s final performance, CBC will be rebroadcasting the concert on Saturday as a tribute to The Tragically Hip’s legacy. Guitarist Rob Baker expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from fans and the opportunity to remember the band’s remarkable journey.
Langlois revealed his initial uneasiness before the last show, but his mood shifted when Downie’s optimism and enthusiasm set a positive tone for the evening. Baker emphasized his role as a supportive friend during the tour, highlighting Downie’s determination to connect with every audience member as a heartfelt gesture of gratitude.
Despite concerns about Downie’s health, the band members witnessed his physical improvement throughout the farewell tour. Looking back, Langlois and Baker acknowledged the unexpected magnitude of their final performance, realizing the profound impact it had on Canadians across the country.
While the band has no plans for a reunion, they recently released a new album titled ‘Live July 22 – August 20, 2016,’ featuring live recordings from their farewell tour. Baker emphasized the healing power of music, recalling a poignant moment with Downie that highlighted the therapeutic nature of music during times of grief and reflection.
