Two ex-NBA athletes have stirred controversy by expressing their intent to join the 2027 WNBA draft, sparking debates on transgender athletes. Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White faced criticism for what was labeled as “political stunts” aimed at belittling a marginalized community and undermining the league.
The WNBA has been embroiled in a series of controversies, including comments made by Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever regarding transgender individuals in sports. Kanter Freedom and White’s plans are contingent on the league’s regulations, which permit only women to participate but do not explicitly exclude transgender women.
Kanter Freedom highlighted on Instagram that he fulfills all WNBA requirements by simply declaring his identity without intending to disrespect any group. White, known for his brief NBA career, mentioned identifying as a woman for basketball purposes and emphasized his physical attributes align with the league’s standards.
Experts like Daniel Sailofsky from York University noted that targeting the WNBA, a league predominantly led by Black and queer women, is a deliberate move within a broader right-wing agenda against transgender individuals. This move has been criticized as insincere and aimed at erasing the presence of trans people in society.
The WNBA’s eligibility rules state that only women can participate, with no explicit mention of transgender exclusion. The league condemned any attempts to use the topic to degrade or marginalize individuals, emphasizing inclusivity and denouncing hate and vitriol directed at players online.
In recent years, right-wing figures have utilized women’s sports to promote anti-trans narratives, impacting policy decisions and organizational regulations. The discourse has extended to government actions, such as former President Trump’s executive order restricting federal funds to schools allowing transgender participation in sports.
Internationally, similar measures have been taken, like Alberta’s legislation banning transgender girls from amateur female sports and the IOC’s limitations on transgender women in women’s events. These policies, according to experts, risk excluding youth from sports and underscore the need to create inclusive and safe environments for all individuals amidst the complex debate on transgender participation in sports.
