Carlos Alcaraz made history by defeating Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final, becoming the youngest tennis player to achieve a career Grand Slam in the Open era and breaking Rafael Nadal’s record. Despite losing the first set, Alcaraz rallied to win the next three sets 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 at Rod Laver Arena, clinching his first victory in Melbourne.
Aged 22, Alcaraz had previously secured two wins in each of the other Grand Slam tournaments but had faced setbacks in Australia. However, this time he advanced to the final after consecutive quarter-final exits, including a loss to Djokovic last year.
In a revengeful match lasting over three hours, Alcaraz defeated Djokovic, an 11-time champion. Alcaraz achieved this milestone at 22 years and 272 days, surpassing the record set by Don Budge in 1938 at the age of 22 years and 363 days, as well as Nadal’s record in the Open era.
With this victory, Alcaraz now holds seven Grand Slam singles titles, the youngest player to reach this feat, breaking Bjorn Borg’s record. The win also places him three titles ahead of Jannik Sinner, whom Djokovic defeated in the semi-finals, making Sinner’s path to catch up with Alcaraz more challenging.
Djokovic, who was aiming for his 25th Grand Slam singles title, faced physical challenges in the match after a strong start. Despite his efforts, he fell short in the final, missing the opportunity to become the oldest man to win a title in the Open Era. Margaret Court, with 24 Grand Slam victories, remains on par with Djokovic’s achievement.
Acknowledging Alcaraz’s remarkable performance, Djokovic congratulated him and expressed his admiration for the young player’s historic achievement. Djokovic also paid tribute to his long-time rival, Nadal, who was present at the arena, thanking him for their shared experiences on the court.
The Australian Open final witnessed a significant shift in the tennis landscape, with Alcaraz’s triumph rewriting the history books and setting a new standard in the sport.
