“Hurricane Mellissa Claims 80 Lives Across Caribbean”

Must read

Hurricane Mellissa has resulted in a total of 80 casualties following the devastating impact of the category five hurricane on the Caribbean region. Mellissa made its destructive landfall on Jamaica on October 28, unleashing winds of 185mph that caused widespread damage to infrastructure, tore off roofs from buildings, and flooded streets. The aftermath left 72% of Jamaicans without electricity and obstructed access to certain areas due to debris blocking roads.

Across the Caribbean, the hurricane has claimed 80 lives, with 32 fatalities in Jamaica, 43 in Haiti, four in the Dominican Republic, and one in Cuba. The death toll is expected to climb as recovery operations progress. Jamaica’s agricultural heartlands, previously hit hard by Hurricane Beryl, bore the brunt of Mellissa’s impact, leading to concerns about increased food prices and disruptions to vital sectors such as tourism.

According to experts at US forecaster AccuWeather, Hurricane Mellissa’s havoc in the Caribbean resulted in estimated damages ranging from $48 billion to $52 billion. Data analytics firm Verisk projected insured losses in Jamaica to be between $2.2 billion and $4.2 billion. Local Jamaican Councillor Kenord Grant of St Catherine highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by Jamaica as it strives to bounce back from the disaster.

Expressing condolences for the heavily affected St Elizabeth region, Councillor Grant emphasized the importance of revitalizing the farming sector swiftly to counteract the economic repercussions. He also warned about the broader impact on various industries, including community tourism in Treasure Beach and popular destinations like Montego Bay and St. Ann.

Councillor Grant affirmed the commitment of both political parties in a unified effort to rebuild Jamaica in the aftermath of the hurricane. He emphasized the shared goal of restoring the nation and ensuring integrity in the reconstruction process. To support Jamaica’s recovery efforts, the Jamaican government has set up a disaster relief website, supportjamaica.gov.jm, where individuals can contribute directly to relief initiatives.
