“Alt-Nets Outshine Major UK Broadband Providers”

Must read

A recent study reveals that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are not meeting customer expectations for reliable service. According to a report by consumer advocate Which?, smaller alternative networks known as “alt-nets” are surpassing big brands by offering faster speeds, more dependable connections, and better value.

The research indicates that internet connection issues like frequent dropouts are widespread, with slow download speeds and service outages being common complaints among consumers. An astounding 91% of broadband users reported experiencing web service problems in the past year, highlighting the prevalence of connectivity issues.

Among the leading providers, Sky faced criticism for frequent dropouts, affecting 38% of its customers, though the problems were promptly resolved. Virgin Media also underperformed, with 30% of users facing regular connection dropouts despite paying premium prices for broadband services, and a quarter of customers complained about slow download speeds.

Sky customers expressed dissatisfaction with broadband speed, with nearly one in three feeling that their service was inadequate. Other providers like TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received low ratings from customers.

On the positive side, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic excelled in reliability, with fewer reported issues compared to major brands. Plusnet stood out among larger providers, outperforming competitors such as Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.

The findings are consistent with previous research by Which?, demonstrating that smaller broadband companies consistently outperform major providers in terms of reliability, customer service, and value for money.

Which? encourages households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if they are dissatisfied with their current service. Using Ofcom’s broadband checker can help consumers identify available network options easily.

In response to the report, a Virgin Media spokesperson highlighted ongoing investments to enhance services, citing official data from Ofcom and independent rankings showing Virgin Media’s top performance across various broadband categories.

In conclusion, the study emphasizes the importance of high-quality broadband as an essential service, urging consumers to leverage competitive deals and switch providers to access better service.
