Barry Hearn has come to the defense of Ronnie O’Sullivan following his withdrawal from The Masters tournament and urged other snooker players to rise to the occasion in his absence.
O’Sullivan, a renowned eight-time Masters champion, cited medical reasons for his last-minute decision to not participate in the prestigious event in London. While O’Sullivan has skipped several tournaments in the past year, his absence at The Masters was unexpected.

Expressing his views on the BBC’s Framed podcast, Hearn stated, “I’m not convinced Ronnie is driven by money. He operates on his own terms. Ronnie is an exceptional talent, a unique player who may not be replicated in our lifetime. While someone might eventually surpass him, for now, he chooses when and if to play, and he has earned that prerogative.”
Acknowledging the disappointment felt by fans when O’Sullivan is absent, Hearn stressed the need for another player to emerge from O’Sullivan’s shadow and fill the void left by his star power.
Hearn emphasized, “Fans must grasp this reality, and the remaining players must acknowledge the duty they hold to fill the void left by the great man. Snooker thrives on having a figure like Ronnie O’Sullivan, and ideally, it would benefit from having several players of his caliber.”
Looking ahead, Hearn expressed optimism about potential successors to O’Sullivan’s legacy, regardless of their nationality. He highlighted the immense impact O’Sullivan has had on the sport and expressed hope for his continued involvement, prioritizing O’Sullivan’s personal happiness above all.
