UK Defence Chief Warns of Russian Threats, Mobilizes Forces

Must read

The UK’s defence chief has issued a warning about increasing threats to the country, following an incident where lasers were directed at RAF pilots by a Russian spy ship. Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the escalating aggression from Vladimir Putin and highlighted the need for the public to acknowledge a heightened level of danger. He disclosed that the Navy and Air Force had been mobilized in response to the presence of the Kremlin spy vessel, Yantar, in UK waters. The Defence Secretary condemned the use of lasers on British aircraft as extremely hazardous and sent a direct message to the Russian leader, stating, “We see you.”

In a significant development, Mr. Healey indicated that military action would be taken if the spy ship altered its course, signaling a significant escalation in tensions between the UK and Moscow. The Yantar, known for surveillance activities during peacetime and potential sabotage in conflict scenarios, was observed near Scottish waters. A Ministry of Defence source revealed that the vessel had breached UK waters between November 5 and 11, underscoring Putin’s increasing belligerence beyond Ukraine.

Mr. Healey stressed the importance of recognizing the current era of threats and the corresponding need for enhanced defense measures. He affirmed the government’s commitment to a substantial increase in defense spending to address these challenges effectively. Referring to a previous encounter where a Royal Navy submarine intercepted the Yantar near undersea cables, the Defence Secretary reiterated the growing Russian threat and emphasized the UK’s vigilance.

Acknowledging the recent hostilities in Ukraine, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper highlighted Russia’s attempts to escalate actions following military setbacks. She condemned the alleged Russian involvement in a train explosion near Mika, branding it as “state terrorism” and supporting Poland in its investigation. The Defence Secretary also outlined Labour’s proactive stance on defense expenditure, contrasting it with the positions of other political parties.

In conclusion, the UK remains vigilant against Russian provocations, with a readiness to respond to any further aggressive actions by the Yantar or similar threats. The government’s commitment to bolstering national defense capabilities is a key priority in the face of escalating tensions.
