The innovative DragonFire laser system developed in Britain has successfully intercepted high-speed drones during recent trials conducted at the MOD’s Hebrides range. These drones are capable of reaching speeds of up to 650km/h, surpassing the velocity of a Formula 1 car. The cutting-edge laser technology, reminiscent of Star Wars, demonstrates remarkable accuracy by being able to target a £1 coin from a distance of one kilometer at a cost of only £10 per shot.
Following the successful trials, a significant £316 million contract has been granted to MBDA to supply new systems to the Royal Navy starting from 2027. The implementation of this technology on a Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer has been expedited by five years compared to the initial schedule.
Known as DragonFire, this high-power laser marks the first of its kind from a European country and signifies a leading directed energy weapons initiative within NATO as part of the Strategic Defence Review (SDR).
The deployment of the state-of-the-art DragonFire laser system is expected to generate and maintain 590 jobs throughout the UK, underscoring the role of defense as a driver of economic growth. This includes the creation of 200 highly skilled positions in Scotland, 185 jobs in the South West of England, and 75 jobs in the East of England, aligning with the Government’s Plan for Change.
Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard MP, emphasized the significance of this high-power laser system in positioning the Royal Navy at the forefront of innovation within NATO, enhancing the UK’s defense capabilities in response to evolving threats. He highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting British industry and fostering job creation to leverage defense as a catalyst for economic development across the nation.
Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander praised the recent contract award of £316 million and the successful drone interception by DragonFire at the MOD’s Hebrides range, emphasizing Scotland’s integral role in bolstering the UK’s national security and its global reputation as a hub for defense excellence. He underscored the transformative impact of investments in the defense sector, creating skilled employment opportunities and driving growth in communities by supporting service personnel and industry in Scotland.
