Peekachu, a beluga whale formerly housed at Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario, has passed away at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, as confirmed by the facility on Wednesday. Concurrently, two other belugas and four dolphins are being transported to Spain.
The 23-year-old female beluga was part of a group of eight belugas that were recently transferred to the Shedd Aquarium. Described as “unique” by the aquarium, Peekachu had some physical limitations, being blind in one eye and smaller in size. However, she adapted well to her new environment, displaying social behaviors and navigation skills.
Initially showing signs of progress by consuming squid, herring, and capelin provided by caretakers, Peekachu’s health deteriorated as she began to refuse food and was diagnosed as dehydrated following a blood test. Despite efforts to administer medication and fluids, Peekachu passed away suddenly on Tuesday evening. A necropsy is underway to determine the cause of death.
The Shedd Aquarium expressed sadness over Peekachu’s passing and emphasized the ongoing health assessments and care provided to all rescued animals. Meanwhile, Marineland conveyed its grief over the loss of Peekachu but assured that the remaining whales are receiving top-notch care at the Shedd Aquarium.
Federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson expressed condolences over the beluga’s death and acknowledged the efforts of organizations involved in the rescue mission. The departure of four dolphins from Marineland to Spain marks the end of captive dolphin facilities in Canada, as reported by The Canadian Press.
Animal advocate groups, such as Animal Justice, have expressed concern over the well-being of the belugas and dolphins during the relocation process. Kaitlyn Mitchell highlighted the health challenges faced by the marine mammals and criticized the rushed nature of the transfers. Mitchell urged for better animal care practices and raised questions about the export permits issued for the animals.
The remaining six belugas at Marineland are scheduled to be relocated to a U.S. aquarium, marking the end of captive whale facilities in Canada. The move comes as Marineland faces financial challenges and seeks alternative arrangements for its marine animals after a failed attempt to sell them to China.
