In a remarkable feat, a horse named Blowers etched its name in British horse racing history by clinching a victory as the longest shot winner. Trained by former Grand National-winning jockey Nigel Hawke, the five-year-old gelding had a surprising lack of prior success.
Blowers had previously suffered a 59-length defeat in a point-to-point Flat race in March and was pulled up in his hurdles debut at Chepstow in December, entering the race as a 200-1 underdog with amateur jockey Ella Herbison. Despite being even less favored in his second outing at Exeter, Blowers, ridden by James Best for the first time, defied the odds and held off the favorite, On The Bayou, to secure a victory by three-quarters of a length.
The unexpected triumph led racecourse commentator Mike Cattermole to exclaim, “Blowers and James Best are going to see this out for a huge upset. Oh my goodness!”
Blowers’ victory surpassed a record that had stood since 1990 in Britain, with Equinoctial winning at Kelso at 250-1. Notably, Ireland has seen two 300-1 winners – He Holds No Fear on the Flat at Leopardstown in August 2020 and Sawbuck over jumps at Punchestown in May 2022.
Coral, the bookmaker, received 82 bets on Blowers, with the largest being a £2 each-way single wager. John Hill from Coral remarked, “Christmas has come early for the 82 punters who backed Blowers at odds of 300-1. They clearly saw something in the horse that us bookmakers didn’t. The Nigel Hawke-trained horse has broken a 35-year record, now being the longest priced winner in British racing history.”
Reflecting on the race, Hawke shared his insights with RacingTV, stating, “He’s only had a couple of runs. He ran in a bumper at Larkhill, and you could see he’s an absolute brute of a horse. His biggest problem is just controlling him.”
Hawke further explained the strategy shift for Blowers’ successful run, emphasizing the importance of settling better and riding more prominently. The stewards, investigating Blowers’ sudden improvement, acknowledged Hawke’s explanation of the gelding’s enhanced performance.
