Millions of individuals in the UK have been advised to prepare for heavy rainfall as various regions are set to experience downpours over the next week, according to a leading forecaster as reported by the Mirror.
Anticipated rainfall amounts of up to 60mm, equivalent to over two inches, are expected in eastern parts of Wales, the Midlands, and northern areas, prompting weather warnings from the Met Office for the approaching Storm Benjamin.
Storm Benjamin is projected to impact British coastlines at midnight, coinciding with the initiation of the initial yellow weather alert.
Warnings for heavy rain will encompass southern and eastern regions of the UK, with significant flooding likely due to the expected high precipitation levels. The potential floods might disrupt travel conditions and lead to transportation delays, as per the Met Office.
Jim Dale, a senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, highlighted the prolonged period of intense rain that is forecasted, emphasizing the risk of widespread flooding and the potential for fallen trees and debris due to accompanying strong winds.
In addition to heavy rain, strong gusts could pose risks to human safety, resulting in flying debris, fallen trees, and potential power outages. A yellow wind warning is set to be in place for eastern England starting at 3 am on Thursday.
Dale further cautioned the public to exercise caution due to the storm’s unpredictable nature, pointing out the rapid intensification of low-pressure systems that have caused significant damage in recent weather patterns.
Emphasizing the variability in weather models, Dale stressed the importance of being prepared for fluctuating conditions, advising individuals to remain vigilant as Storm Benjamin’s impact may vary depending on location.
Acknowledging the uncertainties surrounding the storm, Dale urged a cautious approach, emphasizing the potential for rapid and severe changes in weather conditions due to swiftly deepening low-pressure systems.
