Moroccan authorities apprehended over 100 individuals on Saturday as they attempted to enter Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa, amidst heightened security measures following social media calls for another mass migrant crossing. This incident occurred following a previous surge of more than 72,000 migrants into Ceuta two weeks ago, leading to political tensions and anti-immigration sentiments globally. Tragically, at least 96 individuals lost their lives while attempting to reach European soil.
The individuals detained included 109 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and two Moroccan citizens near Fnideq, the city across from Ceuta. Reports indicated that Moroccan police deployed tear gas to disperse migrant groups near the border, with a significant police presence observed in the area. Spanish soldiers guarded key locations in Ceuta, while police maintained a strong presence in the city’s streets.
In response to the situation, Madrid bolstered security by installing a maritime barrier and deploying additional police personnel to Ceuta, bringing the total to over 1,600 officers. The Interior Ministry emphasized the ongoing reinforcement to ensure order and prevent similar incidents in the future. Approximately 5,000 migrants remained in Ceuta, with some seeking shelter on the urban beach of El Trampolin.
Authorities reiterated that irregular migrants would not be permitted to stay in Ceuta, travel to mainland Spain, or obtain legal status, except in exceptional cases. Rabat had warned against a planned mass border crossing on August 15, leading to increased security measures near the border and in other regions like Melilla, another Spanish enclave in North Africa. Reports indicated that some migrants from sub-Saharan Africa were attempting to bypass security checkpoints by taking alternative routes towards Fnideq.
Concerned voices, including migrants like Driss Sadik and Adil Jamil, advised against risky attempts to cross the border, highlighting the dangers and lack of long-term benefits. The individuals emphasized the challenges faced by those attempting the crossings and discouraged others from following suit. The orchestrated border crossings were described as planned events to leverage collective strength in numbers.
