“NHS Denies Specialized Wheelchair for Girl with Rare Disorder”

Must read

A young girl, whose health complications were initially dismissed by medical professionals, is now facing difficulties walking and has been denied a specialized wheelchair by the NHS.

The girl, named Orla, was born with three heart defects, one functional kidney, and a single fully formed hip socket. Despite being rushed back to the hospital shortly after birth due to health issues, Orla’s conditions were allegedly misdiagnosed by doctors.

Orla, now suffering from a rare genetic disorder called Kabuki Syndrome and severe anxiety, experiences excruciating pain when attempting to walk. Her genetic condition has led to severe knee dislocations, a twisted thigh bone, and other physical abnormalities, making it challenging for her to walk more than short distances.

Due to her deteriorating mobility, Orla’s mother, Faye, sought a powered wheelchair for her daughter, only to have the request denied by the NHS. Faye has resorted to crowdfunding efforts to raise funds for the much-needed wheelchair, emphasizing the urgency of Orla’s situation and the missed opportunities for earlier intervention by healthcare providers.

Faye disclosed instances where her concerns about Orla’s physical well-being were dismissed by medical professionals, leading to delayed diagnoses and inadequate treatment. She highlighted the emotional toll on Orla, who has undergone multiple surgeries and medical procedures, causing significant trauma and hindering her educational and developmental progress.

The family’s plea for support and necessary medical interventions for Orla underscores the critical need for timely and accurate healthcare assessments to prevent further complications and ensure a better quality of life for individuals with complex medical conditions.
