A pregnant drug mule named Bella May Culley has been released from a prison in Georgia, surprising the teenager. Culley, a 19-year-old former student nurse from Teeside, was detained in Tbilisi in May after authorities discovered 11kg of cannabis and over 400g of hashish in her luggage. Despite pleading guilty, she claimed that criminals in Thailand had coerced her into smuggling the drugs.
Following a modification to her plea deal by prosecutors, Culley has been set free instead of serving a two-year sentence. The British woman, who is expected to give birth in December, would have delivered her baby in prison if not for her release.
Accompanied by her mother, Lyanne Kennedy, Bella was seen leaving a court hearing in Georgia, showcasing her baby bump. Her family contributed over £137,000 as part of the plea deal to reduce her potential 20-year sentence. Negotiations led to a final sentence of five months and 25 days, matching the time she had already spent in custody.
Expressing tears of joy during a phone call with her father, Niel Culley, Bella expressed her relief at no longer being incarcerated. As she prepares to return to the UK to begin her journey into motherhood, speculation surrounds the identity of the baby’s father, with hints suggesting a potential relationship back in the UK.
Her family, in response to Bella’s unexpected pregnancy, mentioned a boyfriend in the UK but denied prior knowledge of the pregnancy. Bella’s social media activity prior to her arrest hinted at a possible relationship, with mentions of meeting a man named “Russ” or “Ross” in the Philippines, fueling speculation about the father of her child.
Moreover, Bella’s family shared details of her travels in Thailand and interactions with individuals, including a man from the north west of England before she was reported missing. They highlighted social media content showing Bella with unidentified men and engaging in potentially risky behavior.
The recent release came after Culley’s transfer to a special unit for mothers and babies from Rustavi Prison Number Five. Her mother, Lyanne, revealed improved conditions in the new unit, where Bella now has more freedom and better amenities than in her previous cell.
