Keir Starmer is set to chair a crucial meeting with allies, following a suggestion by Donald Trump that positive developments might be underway in Ukraine peace negotiations.
The Prime Minister will lead discussions with the coalition of more than 30 nations dedicated to overseeing any potential peace agreement on Tuesday. These countries have committed to safeguarding Kyiv’s security if a deal is reached with Russia to end the ongoing conflict.
Recent concerns arose in Ukraine, the UK, and European capitals after a leaked 28-point peace proposal for Ukraine emerged over the weekend. The plan included significant concessions to Moscow, such as reducing Ukraine’s armed forces and forgoing plans to join NATO.
Following key talks in Geneva on Sunday involving officials from Europe, Ukraine, and the US, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted “tremendous” progress. He expressed optimism about the plan being accepted by both European and Ukrainian parties.
Overnight, US President also hinted at positive developments, stating on social media his belief in potential progress in peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Keir Starmer, when asked about the prospects for progress in Ukraine, emphasized the ongoing talks in Geneva and the collective efforts towards achieving a just and enduring peace.
Starmer mentioned leading the coalition of the willing, a group supporting Ukraine with capabilities, and planning a virtual meeting to review progress made and potential advancements towards a lasting peace agreement.
Earlier, the PM’s official spokesperson acknowledged the substantial progress achieved during the Geneva meetings. While some disagreements remain, intense work on the peace plan is expected to continue in the upcoming days and weeks, with the Prime Minister continuing engagements with world leaders.
