Keir Starmer expressed shock as he witnessed the rescue of a teenage girl from debris in Ukraine while commemorating his daughter’s birthday. The girl, whose mother died in a Kyiv strike, was a similar age to his own daughter. Starmer condemned Vladimir Putin’s ongoing attacks as “abhorrent.”
In a parliamentary update, Starmer mentioned celebrating his daughter’s birthday before seeing news footage of a young girl of the same age being rescued from rubble in Ukraine. He criticized the situation as appalling and unimaginable.
Starmer is scheduled to engage in critical discussions with 36 members of the ‘coalition of the willing,’ a group of nations collaborating to promote peace in Ukraine. He highlighted recent talks with Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasizing the importance of the United States’ efforts to end the conflict.
Acknowledging ongoing negotiations, Starmer praised elements of the 28-point peace plan, particularly the provisions for security guarantees. He emphasized progress made in Geneva towards an updated peace framework with Ukraine and the U.S., assuring continued refinement of the plan.
Despite recognizing the challenges ahead, Starmer reiterated his commitment to the cause and advancing the peace process. He stressed the necessity of Ukraine’s central role in peace talks.
Reflecting on discussions in South Africa, Starmer emphasized the urgent need to remove Russian oil and gas from the global market, especially with winter approaching and Putin’s relentless attacks on civilians and energy infrastructure. He condemned Russia for its actions, citing recent drone and missile strikes resulting in civilian casualties.
