Keir Starmer has strongly criticized Nigel Farage, urging him to look into any additional connections between Reform and Russia.
During a parliamentary update, Starmer expressed disbelief and concern over a former high-ranking member of Farage’s party receiving a lengthy prison sentence for accepting Russian bribes. Nathan Gill, the former Welsh leader of Reform UK, was convicted and sentenced to over ten years in jail for delivering scripted speeches while serving as a European Parliament member.
Addressing the Commons, Starmer emphasized the seriousness of the situation, calling for Reform’s leadership to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter. He questioned the circumstances that led to such incidents within their party and demanded clarity on any other potential links.
The remarks were made in response to Kemi Badenoch, a Conservative party leader, who also condemned Reform’s stance. Starmer highlighted the dangers of aligning with Putin’s regime, stating that Reform’s pro-Putin approach would hinder efforts to unite allies on global issues.
The calls for an investigation have intensified, pressuring Farage to delve into whether Gill’s actions were isolated. Gill, who confessed to multiple counts of blackmail, previously served as a UKIP and Brexit Party MEP from 2014 to 2020.
Richard Tice, the deputy leader of Reform UK, denounced Putin as a tyrannical leader and dismissed criticisms as mere distractions. Tice reaffirmed his and Reform’s unwavering support for Ukraine, citing personal contributions and aid deliveries to Ukrainian soldiers.
Farage, responding to media queries, distanced himself from policing responsibilities, as Gill was discovered to have received substantial payments from a pro-Russia figure associated with Viktor Medvedchuk, a close ally of Putin. Medvedchuk, the owner of a pro-Russia TV network in Ukraine, faced allegations of treason and was extradited to Russia following the 2022 invasion.
As tensions escalate, the spotlight remains on Farage and Reform UK to address lingering concerns over potential ties to Russia and uphold their commitments to international alliances.
