“The Family Chat Campaign by Tesco Mobile Promotes Safe Phone Usage”

Must read

As their 11-year-old son prepared to enter secondary school in September, Giovanna and Tom Fletcher felt it was time for him to have a cellphone. Acknowledging the importance of managing his access and safety online, Giovanna emphasized the need for open communication within the family.

In light of many children receiving smartphones as Christmas gifts, families are faced with the responsibility of navigating the challenges and benefits that come with this technology. To support families in this journey, a campaign called The Family Chat, in partnership with Tesco Mobile, aims to encourage conversations about online device usage at every stage of a child’s development.

Giovanna expressed her enthusiasm for the campaign, highlighting the valuable resources offered by Tesco Mobile, which help parents like herself feel more informed and equipped to guide their children in using technology responsibly.

The couple’s two younger sons, aged seven and nine, have tablets that enable them to communicate with family members and play games online. When their eldest son transitioned to high school, they provided him with a restricted smartphone for essential communication purposes, emphasizing the importance of setting boundaries and explaining the reasons behind them.

Recognizing the need for balance, Giovanna emphasized the family’s rules about phone usage, such as no phones in the bedroom or at the dinner table, and minimizing screen time when spending time together. She stressed the gradual approach to introducing technology to children, ensuring they are ready for the responsibilities that come with it.

Additionally, she advised parents on steps to promote online safety for children, including setting up child accounts, ensuring age-appropriate settings, activating safety filters, utilizing parental controls, and maintaining ongoing conversations about online behavior and smartphone usage.

Dr. Rebecca Whittington, Reach’s online safety editor, emphasized the importance of prioritizing a safe setup for new devices to protect children from potential online risks during the initial excitement of using a new phone.
