“Which? Report: Major Mobile Networks Trail Small Rivals”

Must read

A recent report by consumer group Which? revealed that the major mobile networks like EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2 are falling short in overall performance compared to smaller competitors. The report, based on a survey of over 5,000 smartphone users nationwide, highlighted that lesser-known networks often offer better value and superior customer service.

The research aimed to evaluate how well providers are meeting customer needs. It found that the established “Big Four” networks are trailing behind many smaller rivals in terms of customer satisfaction and service quality.

Among the top-ranked mobile providers were Talkmobile, Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY. Despite being part of the major players, EE performed the best, securing the ninth spot in the rankings, while O2 and Three were among the lower-rated networks.

Price emerged as a significant factor in the survey, with customers on the Big Four networks paying an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, compared to just £9 for users on smaller networks. Interestingly, many smaller providers utilize major networks’ infrastructure, offering comparable signal and service quality at a lower cost.

The report also highlighted the ease of switching mobile networks, with some customers being able to switch in as little as 10 minutes. One member shared their positive experience of saving around £200 annually by switching from O2 to a more cost-effective SMARTY plan.

Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outshine larger firms by offering better customer service and more affordable deals. She encouraged customers to consider switching to providers that offer better value, especially those approaching the end of their contracts.

The rankings by Which? placed Talkmobile at the top with 83%, followed by Tesco Mobile (81%), Giffgaff (79%), SMARTY (79%), and others like Voxi, 1p Mobile, Lebara, and Asda Mobile. Notably, EE scored 74%, while O2 and Three received lower scores of 67% and 65%, respectively.
