The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band has achieved global success once again. After a 17-year gap, the band secured the Grade 1 world title at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. This victory marks the band’s seventh championship win. Led by Pipe Major Alan Bevan, the band’s outstanding performance was commended by Glasgow Life, the organization hosting the competition on behalf of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association.

Bevan expressed the significance of winning this prestigious championship, emphasizing its status as the top prize in the world of pipe bands. Notably, this win is the first time since 2010 that a non-UK band has claimed the world championship, according to Glasgow Life.

Over 200 bands from various countries participated in the competition, showcasing the talent of thousands of performers from nations like Australia, New Zealand, Oman, and Malaysia. Andrew Lee, a bagpiper in the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band, shared his elation at the band’s long-awaited victory, highlighting the years of dedication and effort that led to this success.

Preparations for the competition began in the fall, with Bevan emphasizing the band’s focus on expressive playing and emulating the sound of a solo performer. The band’s dynamic drum section, known for its energy, often receives a rousing reception from the audience. This year, the band felt exceptionally well-prepared, delivering their best performances during the competition.

Judged on their four performances across the two-day event, the band comprises individuals from diverse backgrounds, including teachers, lawyers, students, and even a bagpipe maker like Lee. Bevan praised the strong piping community in British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest, highlighting the region’s excellent teachers and youth programs for aspiring musicians.
