If you are an Amazon shopper, it’s important to be extra cautious and alert for suspicious emails. Amazon, being one of the largest online retailers globally, is a prime target for scammers seeking to steal personal and financial information from the millions of daily shoppers it attracts.
The online giant recently issued a warning to customers about being wary of deceptive emails, calls, and texts attempting to impersonate the company. According to Amazon, cybercriminals find major shopping periods especially appealing for their fraudulent activities.
“During significant shopping events, being vigilant about malicious activities is crucial since scammers utilize various platforms like email, phone calls, social media, and texts to pose as reputable brands,” Amazon stated.
As the summer holiday season approaches, there has been a noticeable increase in phishing attempts targeting Amazon customers, as reported by Mirror Online. A new scam tactic involves sending emails claiming to have detected unusual activity on Amazon accounts and temporarily suspending access, prompting recipients to click a link for account restoration.
The fraudulent message states: “We have identified unusual activity on your account. To secure your account, access has been restricted temporarily. Please verify your identity to restore full access.”
Although the email may seem authentic at first glance with official Amazon branding and a seemingly legitimate sender address, clicking on the provided link redirects recipients to a fake login page intended to capture account credentials and sensitive details.
Amazon emphasizes that it never requests customers to provide sensitive information outside its official platforms. In case of doubt regarding the authenticity of a message, customers should directly contact Amazon Customer Service, avoiding the use of any phone numbers or links included in suspicious emails or texts.
Customers are advised to verify any claims by logging into their Amazon account and checking the “Your Orders” section on the official website or Amazon Shopping app. Legitimate purchases and account notifications will always be displayed there.
In the event of receiving an unexpected email, text, or call purporting to be from Amazon, refrain from clicking links, downloading attachments, or sharing personal information until confirming its legitimacy. Suspected scam messages can also be reported using Amazon’s self-service reporting tool with minimal steps.
