“Discover Bilbao: TUI’s New City Break Destination”

Must read

TUI has introduced a fresh city break destination for the upcoming spring season. The new addition is nestled in a region of Spain that is gaining popularity among Brits due to its distinctive features.

For travelers seeking a change from the crowded Spanish Costas, Northern Spain is emerging as an appealing alternative. The Basque Country, in particular, witnessed a notable 40% rise in visitors last year, albeit still far fewer than the tourist numbers in Southern Spain.

Bilbao, situated at the core of the Basque Country, serves as an ideal gateway to explore the region’s unique charm and heritage, especially if you haven’t explored this part of Spain before.

TUI will be providing city break packages to Bilbao from four major UK airports this spring: Bristol, London-Gatwick, London-Heathrow, and Manchester. The short flight duration from London, under two hours, makes it perfect for a quick getaway or a long weekend trip.

In a feature by Lonely Planet, a travel writer vividly described the approach to Bilbao Airport, noting the lush greenery that defies the typical image of Spain.

The climate and landscapes of Northern Spain offer a stark contrast to the dry, sunny south, with milder temperatures providing a refreshing escape from summer heatwaves. Bilbao’s average daily highs in March and April hover around 17C, reaching 26C in summer, while the south can experience mid-30s temperatures. Additionally, the region receives more rainfall, contributing to its lush green surroundings.

Bilbao, nestled alongside the Nervión River, boasts attractions like the charming old town, Casco Viejo, featuring historic colorful buildings, a majestic cathedral, and the picturesque Plaza Nueva lined with vibrant bars and eateries, making it an enticing city break destination.

The Guggenheim Museum, renowned for its distinctive Frank Gehry-designed architecture, offers a contemporary art haven that attracts visitors with its extensive art collection. Even if you don’t go inside, witnessing the museum’s titanium-clad exterior gleaming in the sunlight is an experience in itself.

Apart from its cultural allure, Bilbao is celebrated for its diverse culinary scene, with numerous pintxos bars dotting the streets. Pintxos, akin to northern Spain’s version of tapas, feature bite-sized delights of bread topped with various ingredients like jamón, seafood, or cheese, secured with a cocktail stick.

Northern Spain is also famous for its Rioja wines, a perfect complement to pintxos. Visitors can indulge in day trips to nearby wineries or savor wine tastings at the city’s wine bars.

TUI’s offerings include a 7-night stay at the 4T NYX Hotel Bilbao by Leonardo Hotels on a room-only basis, starting at £583 per person for two adults sharing a Double or Twin Comfort Room departing from London Gatwick on the 14th of April 2026 with hand luggage only.

Alternatively, guests can opt for a seven-night holiday at Hotel Sirimiri on a room-only basis, priced from £451 per person for two adults sharing a Double or Twin Standard Room departing from London Heathrow on the 21st of April 2026 with hand luggage only. Prices are subject to availability and may vary.
