Britons are being urged to monitor their email accounts following the exposure of stolen details in a significant database update. The latest revision of a vast database containing pilfered credentials has disclosed that information from 183 million users was made public “from various sources.” This data encompassed email addresses from platforms like Gmail, passwords, and the corresponding websites. Troy Hunt, the individual who aggregated the data and shared it on the website Have I Been Pwned, mentioned that a total of 3.5 terabytes of data were compromised.
In light of this revelation, Hunt emphasized the importance for internet users to ensure the security of their data. Google has reassured its users of robust defenses in place. The compromised data mainly consisted of “stealer logs and credential stuffing lists,” as stated in the database entry. Hunt, speaking to cybersecurity expert Troy Hunt, noted that the stolen information impacted “all major email providers,” with Gmail being particularly prominent.
Google’s spokesperson reiterated the strength of their defenses, affirming that Gmail remains secure, with users protected. The spokesperson highlighted that approximately 90% of the stolen data had been previously identified, with around 16 million new entries added to the dataset on HIBP.
The data shared online by Google stemmed from ongoing analysis of stolen credentials across the web and was not indicative of a targeted attack on any specific entity. Addressing concerns about potential data harvesting, a Google spokesperson suggested utilizing existing tools provided by the firm to enhance security measures. Users were advised to monitor their account activity and utilize account recovery options if suspicious activity is detected.
