Must read

A picturesque island in Spain remains a hidden gem, featuring uncrowded beaches, untouched coastlines, and pristine natural pools.

The Canary Islands have been a popular destination for British tourists seeking sunny getaways close to the UK. Known for their beautiful sandy beaches, unique volcanic landscapes, and clear blue waters, these islands offer warm temperatures throughout the year, with winter highs reaching a pleasant 21C, earning them the nickname of Europe’s ‘sunshine center.’

Despite the popularity of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura, there is one stunning island that often goes unnoticed, offering a peaceful escape from the usual tourist crowds.

El Hierro, the smallest and most southwestern Canary Island, is considered one of the archipelago’s most scenic destinations. Its diverse and unspoiled terrain, along with secluded sandy stretches, make it a true hidden treasure.

The island’s beaches feature distinctive black or red volcanic sands, creating serene havens perfect for those seeking tranquility. Many of these beaches have natural swimming pools and secluded coves, as reported by the Express.

Playa del Verodal stands out with its striking red sand set against towering cliffs, although swimming is not recommended due to strong currents, the breathtaking scenery is worth a visit.

Cala de Tacorón is another hidden gem, nestled between volcanic black sand and shimmering turquoise waters. Known as the ‘calm sea,’ it offers a peaceful setting for swimming and snorkeling.

El Hierro boasts several other beaches worth exploring, such as the protected Las Playas, a 4km black pebble beach, and Playa de Timijiraque, popular among surfers. The natural swimming pools scattered around the island are also not to be missed.

Charco Azul, a mesmerizing natural pool formed by volcanic activity near Playa de los Bucios, is considered one of the best swimming spots on the island, thanks to its tranquil waters and sheltered location.

The expansive La Maceta natural sea pools provide a fantastic swimming spot with stunning coastal views. With convenient facilities and easy access, it’s an excellent place to spend a day soaking up the sun and taking a refreshing swim.

El Hierro’s rugged terrain offers numerous hiking trails that allow visitors to appreciate the coastline from high volcanic peaks, such as the La Llanía trail. Along these paths, travelers may encounter iconic landmarks like Roque de la Bonanza and the Orchilla lighthouse.

With its secluded beaches and natural pools, El Hierro is an ideal retreat for those seeking a quiet escape to explore the island’s impressive landmarks. Additionally, the island offers authentic eateries and pubs where visitors can dine with locals and savor genuine Mediterranean flavors.

According to online menus, a bottle of beer is affordable, costing around €2.50 (£2.17), with some reports of even lower prices in certain areas of the island, making a visit here quite budget-friendly.

Traveling to El Hierro involves flying from London Stansted to Tenerife, with Ryanair flights starting from £16. From Tenerife, a ferry ride of just over two hours will transport you to this secluded paradise.
