“GAA Star DJ Carey Sentenced to 5 Years for Cancer Scam”

Must read

A former Hurling star, DJ Carey, has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison for deceiving friends, family, and supporters out of nearly €400,000 by falsely claiming he had cancer and needed treatment funds. Carey, from Maynooth, Co Kildare, admitted to 10 counts of fraudulently obtaining money from 13 individuals, including notable figures like Denis O’Brien and others.

During the sentencing at the Criminal Court of Justice in Dublin, Judge Martin Nolan criticized Carey for taking advantage of people’s generosity, labeling his actions as “reprehensible behavior.” While acknowledging that Carey is not likely to commit such offenses in the future, the judge remarked that the sportsman’s reputation has been irreparably damaged.

Despite Carey’s once-illustrious career in inter-county GAA with Kilkenny, where he earned acclaim as one of the sport’s most successful players, he now faces the consequences of his deceitful actions. Dressed in a purple jacket, navy shirt, and black shoes, Carey received his custodial sentence in court before being led away.
