When voters head to the polling stations in Gorton and Denton this Thursday, they hold the future of over 6,000 local children in their hands. These youngsters are poised to benefit from the elimination of the controversial two-child rule starting on April 1st, potentially boosting weekly income for some low-income families by nearly £70.
Statistics reveal that child poverty continues to affect a significant portion of children in the constituency, with almost half, 48%, living in impoverished conditions. In Longsight, an alarming 73% of children are growing up in poverty. However, as the Labour government’s child-friendly reforms take effect in April, these distressing figures are anticipated to decline significantly, fostering hope and improving educational outcomes for children.
The government’s efforts to combat poverty are evident through the expansion of breakfast clubs, free school meals, and the establishment of more Sure Start centers. These initiatives aim to uplift children out of poverty, offering them new opportunities and a brighter future.
Recently, the Reform party expressed their desire to abolish the two-child rule as well. Despite their previous support for its abolition in the House of Commons by the current shadow chancellor, Robert Jenrick, the party now intends to reinstate the rule, potentially plunging children back into poverty.
Claims made by Reform party supporters branding the beneficiaries of these policies as lazy, unemployed parents are refuted by data showing that 60% of affected children have at least one working parent. Additionally, 30% of these children are either too young, ill, or disabled, preventing their parents from working.
With the majority of families, over 90%, striving to provide for their children, the right-wing narrative of lazy parents is not only inaccurate but also morally wrong. The upcoming by-election presents voters with a critical choice: to support the continuation of poverty-reduction efforts with Labour’s local candidate Angeliki Stogia or revert to past Tory policies that perpetuated poverty.
