A chilling scene unfolded as a Russian helicopter pilot faced a critical decision following a tragic crash that claimed five lives. Video footage captured the helicopter in Russia’s Republic of Dagestan attempting to land but colliding with a pier, causing its tail to break off. Despite the damaged aircraft, the pilot attempted to fly towards open water moments before the fatal crash.
The helicopter, a Ka-226 carrying defense plant workers linked to war efforts, suffered a broken tail during the incident. Tragically, four occupants perished in the crash, while three survived but sustained serious injuries. The dramatic footage depicts the helicopter clipping an earthen pier, causing the tail to snap and dangle as the aircraft ascended.
In a perplexing move, the pilot lifted the helicopter over the sea with the broken tail instead of shutting down the engine. Despite briefly maintaining control, the helicopter ultimately lost stability while trying to gain altitude over the water. Eventually, the pilot attempted an emergency landing back on land, but the aircraft spiraled out of control and crashed.
Additional CCTV footage showed the helicopter bursting into flames near the shore before the crash. Among the survivors, the pilot and two others are currently receiving intensive care. The pilot has faced criticism in Russia for his unconventional decision to head towards deep water after the initial incident.
Ruslan Leviev, founder of the Conflict Intelligence Team, speculated that the pilot may have been impaired and mistakenly initiated a climb when realizing the landing would be unsuccessful. The crash claimed the lives of four senior staff members from the Kizlyar Electromechanical Plant, known for manufacturing equipment for military planes involved in the conflict in Ukraine.
The Russian Federal Air Transport Agency labeled the crash a “catastrophe.” The ill-fated flight was en route from Kizlyar to a recreation base when the tragedy occurred.
