During a vacation in the Canary Islands, a father of two tragically lost his life after a wooden bannister rail gave way on a balcony, causing him to fall 20 feet into an apartment stairwell, as revealed in an inquest today.
Darren Silcox, a well-regarded shopkeeper aged 56, was involved in the incident along with another man in the early morning hours. Both individuals were standing on the balcony when the railing suddenly collapsed. Mr. Silcox, who had traveled from Cwmbran, Gwent, to the Costa Teguise resort in Lanzarote for a holiday, succumbed to his injuries, while the other man, aged 54, sustained severe injuries and received treatment at a local hospital. The unfortunate event took place at the Galeon Playa Apartments in Costa Teguise.
The inquest, which commenced following Mr. Silcox’s death, disclosed that he fell into the stairwell due to the collapse of the wooden bannister. The Gwent Coroner’s Court shared that the local civil guard was investigating the matter.
Rose Farmer, the Area Coroner for Gwent, stated that the inquest was initiated due to Mr. Silcox’s fatal fall resulting from traumatic brain injury, skull fractures, and lacerations. The community was shocked by the tragic loss, with customers of his two Silcox stores expressing deep sorrow over the incident.
Describing the situation as terrible, a local individual remarked on the family’s store and Mr. Silcox’s diligent nature. The shopkeeper operated stores in Pontnewydd and Five Locks. Sadly, Mr. Silcox’s wife had passed away the previous year after battling an illness, leaving their two children orphaned.
Following the incident on October 25, which led to Mr. Silcox’s untimely death and the other man’s injuries, the Spanish Civil Guard has launched an investigation focusing on potential safety lapses that could have contributed to the tragedy. Emergency services responded to the scene at 1:30 am, with Mr. Silcox declared deceased at 3:30 am. The survivor was promptly attended to and taken to Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital’s intensive care unit.
The incident has had a profound impact on the tourist hotspot, where visitors expect high safety standards in accommodations. While initial reports mention the compromised railing was located in an upper area of an undisclosed hotel, authorities have not released the establishment’s name.
The inquest proceedings have been adjourned and are scheduled for a full hearing on July 20, 2026.
