An experienced animal trainer tragically lost his life after being attacked by a grizzly bear he had raised since childhood during a stunt gone wrong.
Stephan Miller, 39, was assisting at his cousin’s wildlife training center, Randy Miller’s Predators in Action, located in the San Bernardino mountains near Los Angeles, USA, when the incident occurred.
He was aiding in filming a promotional video with Rocky, a 7.5-foot-tall bear weighing approximately 50 stone, due to his expertise in working with bears and entertainment industry experience.
The grizzly, a five-year-old bear accustomed to human interaction, had previously appeared in the 2008 film “Semi-Pro,” where Stephan doubled for actor Will Ferrell in wrestling scenes.
On the day of the attack, while attempting to film a playful advertisement, Rocky suddenly lunged at Stephan’s neck, catching him off guard and inflicting a fatal bite.
Handlers swiftly intervened, using pepper spray to restrain the bear and remove Rocky from the scene within seconds, while emergency medical services rushed to provide aid. Despite efforts to revive him, Stephan succumbed to his injuries shortly after the attack, leaving behind a wife and two children.
Randy, the owner of the training facility known for staging animal encounters, expressed the swiftness of the tragic event and the necessary actions taken to subdue the bear.
Describing the circumstances leading up to the attack, Randy recounted how Stephan had been familiarizing himself with the bear throughout the day, engaging in bonding activities and preparing for a wrestling scene. Despite following safety protocols and setting up the location accordingly, the bear unexpectedly turned aggressive, leading to the fatal incident.
Following public outcry and pressure from animal welfare organizations, Rocky was spared from euthanasia and relocated to a sanctuary in California. Authorities confirmed that the training center possessed all required permits for conducting such filming activities.
The facility housed a variety of exotic animals, including brown bears, a black bear, snakes, reptiles, an alligator, crocodile, leopard, mountain lion, African lions, and tigers.
Hollywood filmmaker Nick Palumbo, a close friend of Stephan and Randy, expressed his grief over the tragic loss, emphasizing the bond between Stephan and the bear and dismissing any malicious intent on the bear’s part.
The incident prompted investigations by the state’s Department of Fish and Game and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, with subsequent decisions regarding the bear’s fate pending review.
