Belgium and Greece Facing Wildfire Challenges Amid Extreme Summer Conditions
In Belgium, one of the largest wildfires in the country’s history raged uncontrollably, with cooler weather and rain providing some relief to firefighters. The fire, located in peaty soil, may persist underground for months and sporadically reignite, as stated by a fire ranger.
Europe is currently experiencing one of its hottest and driest summers on record, attributed to climate change according to recent studies. King Philippe of Belgium interrupted his summer vacation to visit emergency services battling the wildfire in the eastern High Fens region. The fire has scorched an estimated 30 square kilometers, leaving charred trees and smoldering ground.
Despite favorable winds, the fire in Liège province remained out of control in inaccessible areas, as reported by the Wallonia region. Over 500 firefighters, supported by aircraft from Norway, Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands, along with local police drones, continued their efforts after a cold front brought rain overnight.
Farmers joined in to supply water for firefighting, with helicopters dropping massive water sacks over the flames. The Wallonia regional public services spokesperson, Nicolas Yernaux, mentioned that although the overnight rain helped contain the blaze, the fire could still persist underground due to the peaty soil.
In Greece, a wildfire near the main airport in Athens was quickly extinguished after flaring up, while a separate fire in the Landes region of southwestern France was brought under control after four days of intense firefighting efforts. The French government announced a 12 million-euro aid package to support affected regions in rebuilding homes and businesses.
Tourists evacuated the affected areas in Belgium, Greece, and France, with precautionary evacuation orders still in place for hundreds of residents. In a separate incident, an 80-year-old man was arrested in Greece on arson charges for allegedly starting a fire intentionally.
The severity of wildfires across various European countries underscores the urgent need for enhanced preventative measures and heightened vigilance in the face of extreme weather conditions.
