The Metropolitan Police have assumed control of the search for a convicted sex offender who was mistakenly released from prison, with authorities indicating a strong belief that the individual is currently in London.
The public is urged to immediately contact 999 upon sighting Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, a 38-year-old Ethiopian national who was serving a 12-month sentence for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. Kebatu was residing at the Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex, prior to his incarceration. Following his sighting boarding a train in Chelmsford, Justice Secretary David Lammy confirmed Kebatu’s presence in London, prompting the Metropolitan Police to take over the search from Essex Police.
Commander James Conway emphasized the high priority of locating Kebatu, with an experienced investigating officer leading the search efforts. CCTV footage is being analyzed to trace Kebatu’s movements, with the Commander highlighting the need for discretion in providing updates to avoid compromising the ongoing manhunt.
Kebatu was mistakenly released from HMP Chelmsford, receiving a discharge grant of £76 after being erroneously categorized as a prisoner due for release on license. Authorities stress the importance of reporting any sightings or information regarding Kebatu’s whereabouts to emergency services.
Political figures, including Sir Keir Starmer and Deputy Prime Minister Mr Lammy, expressed outrage over the incident, calling for swift action to capture and deport Kebatu. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp condemned the release as a display of incompetence and demanded a public inquiry into the matter.
An investigation is underway following the security lapse at HMP Chelmsford, with a prison officer relieved of duties pending further inquiries to ensure public safety. Reports from HM Inspectorate of Prisons highlighted operational challenges faced by HMP Chelmsford, attributing them to national capacity issues and staff shortages.
During his trial, Kebatu’s inappropriate behavior towards women, including making unwanted advances and sexual assaults, was detailed. Found guilty of multiple offenses, Kebatu expressed a desire for deportation during his sentencing hearing.
Discrepancies in Kebatu’s age, as stated by different sources, have emerged, complicating efforts to track him down for deportation. The Home Office was prepared to transfer him to an immigration removal center before the incident unfolded.
