Britain is preparing for severe weather conditions as Storm Benjamin approaches, bringing winds exceeding 70mph and heavy rainfall. The Met Office has issued multiple yellow weather warnings as the storm heads towards the UK, with the potential for flooding, power outages, and travel disruptions in various regions.
The storm is expected to intensify throughout the day, leading to possible damage to buildings, falling debris, and delays in travel. According to WXCharts data, powerful gusts are forecasted to hit parts of Kent and Lincolnshire, reaching speeds of up to 80mph and 75mph, respectively, beginning at 6am on Thursday.
As the morning progresses, areas such as Norwich, Southampton, Oxford, and Swindon will also experience strong winds and heavy rain. Coastal regions in the southwest and Wales are likely to bear the brunt of the storm, while northern areas, including Scotland, will see colder temperatures as the storm system pulls in cooler air.
By midday, the winds are expected to peak, with speeds potentially reaching nearly 90mph in the southern half of the UK. The afternoon and evening will continue to be challenging, with strong winds persisting in regions from Manchester southwards. Later in the day, gusts of up to 88mph may affect areas further north, such as Leeds and Bradford.
The final surge of the storm is anticipated around 9pm, with the strongest winds returning to the southeast. Wind speeds could reach up to 90mph in cities like London, Norwich, and Essex, exposing both the southeast and northeast of England to the storm’s most intense impact.
Chief Met Office Meteorologist Rebekah Hicks cautioned that wind gusts could potentially exceed 70mph, especially in coastal areas. The uncertainty surrounding the track and intensity of the storm system necessitates staying updated on the latest forecasts and warnings as the situation evolves rapidly.
